Update 5/7/2008
With round one of the playoffs halfway done, these teams have qualified for Division 1 City Championships and
State Championships: Pennsbury, Haverford, Lower Merion, Cardinal O'Hara, and North Penn. The results have
been posted on the Power Rankings page, two games left to play before Division 1 City Championships on May 17th.
PHUEL is still looking for a host for Division 2 City Championships, the target date is May 31st. Division 2 is open to any and all PHUEL
teams that have not qualified for States. If you are interested in participating or hosting please contact
tomcook AT cooksclassroom DOT com.
Update 5/5/2008
Power Rankings have been updated to post playoff matchup for Division 1 City Championships and State Championships.
Winning teams will qualify for State Championships and seeding will be determined during the D1 City Champs on
May 17th at Edgely. Information for D2 city championships coming shortly.
Update 4/25/2008
With the season almost halfway over, many teams are beginning to focus on the playoffs, City and State
Championships. Here are the details teams need to be aware of. To be eligible for Division 1 City and
State Championships teams must have completed the following:
- Submitted Waivers
- Submitted rosters
- Paid the League Insurance Fee
- Play games against 3 unique opponents by May 5th
The first three items should have been completed well before now. Most teams in the league have completed
all of these items, just a handful still need to play a game or two. If you are one of those teams, please
get a game in immediately! Even if your team does not anticipate playing at States, you will help our league
to secure more bids at the Championship.
Playoffs
New additions to the site include Power Rankings. These Power Rankings are based on
the UPA RRI, a ranking index that takes into account all opponents played and scores of those games. The
rankings also incorporate league standings to a small degree. This is the ranking system that will be used
to determine seeding for playoffs.
PHUEL anticipates receiving 7 bids to State Championships, as such, the
playoffs will consist of the top 14 teams, based on the Power Rankings. Playoff will be from May 6th - May 15th. The match-ups will be posted
here on May 5th. It will be the responsibility of teams to schedule games with their opponents. If teams are having difficulty finding field
space, please contact Tom Cook, and he will assist in finding a neutral field.
The winners of the playoff round will then play on May 17th for seeding at States. The two highest ranked
losers from the playoff round will be eligible to match-up in a play-in game for a chance at redemption into
the City Championship Division 1 bracket. Teams that are not involved in Division 1, will still have a chance
to play for the Division 2 City Championship.
Coaches and captains should encourage all of their players to register with the UPA. They do not need to pay
for membership until their team wins their playoff game. After that, all Division 1 teams need to become full
UPA members to compete at States. It is not a difficult process, but does take some time. If your team has
competed in a UPA event already this year, such as Born 2 Dive, you are already UPA members.
Update 4/17/2008
New for 2008: "UHLe" - Uhle's Hat League
Uhle's Hat League is a LEARNING LEAGUE for beginners and intermediate-level players. NO EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED; just bring your enthusiasm, humor, wit, and interest in chasing plastic. It's a great way to learn ultimate, improve your skills, and meet new people. Oh, and it's a hat league, which means teams are formed relatively randomly---you can sign up solo or as part of a "baggage" group of up to 4 players.
Experienced players captain teams and pass on their knowledge and love of the game.
When: Monday nights, June through early August
Where: Edgely fields in Fairmount Park
REGISTRATION ENDS MAY 26th....sign up now! Cost is $20 for novices & youth players
Full details on PADA home page & summer league page. UHLe
A word about the "divisions" on the standings page. The divisions are in no way official. They are simply
a way for teams to interpret standings. They are based on a combination of record, opponents, and RRI. The
divisions were created as a way for teams to see what teams of similiar skill level are doing in comparison.
If you have a major concern or problem with the divisions, please contact Tom Cook at tomcook AT cooksclassroom DOT com.
Update 4/14/2008
Lots of news this post, so read it all! The drop-dead date for waivers, rosters and league fees is this
Friday, April 18th. If the material is not in hand by Friday (not in the mail, but in the hands of a league official)
then your team will be ineligible for City Championships and therefore, State Championships.
A few years back, Matt McCabe (Alumni of St. Joe's Prep) started the PlayUtly Blog that is now nationally recognized.
One of the biggest parts of his blog is the yearly College Signing day. Matt would like anyone from PHUEL
that is going to play in college to send him the following information:
College
Last Name, First Name
High School
Height
Right Handed / Left Handed
HS State
HS League
Worlds Tryout?
Worlds Team?
You can post your information directly to the blog by going here

Congratulations to Haverford High School for winning the HipHoponPop Championship this weekend. HUDA played
exceptionally well all day. Also congratulations to O'Hara GirlSquad for winning the Girls' Division and
Spirit of the Game with their spontaneous dance parties.
While we are on the subject of awards and recognition, PHUEL's own Isaac Saul (Pennsbury) has been named to
the US Junior National Team, and PHUEL almunae Carly Maconaghy (CB East) has been named a reserve on the Women's
Junior National Team. Great job and good luck representing the US and PHUEL.
Update 4/9/2008
This weekend is HipHoponPop at Edgely. The captains' meeting is at 8:40 with games to commence at 9:00 sharp.
This tournament is highly anticipated and a premier youth event for the East Coast with teams coming from
Virginia, New York, New Jersey and well as several local PHUEL teams. The tournament will also feature a
Girls' Division, a round robin between Haverford, Lower Merion, and O'Hara. Details can be found on the
Tournaments page. Good luck to all teams.
Update 4/4/2008
Due to rain, the PHUEL All Star game will be moved to Sunday at 2:00. All Players should bring a white and a blue
shirt. Players should arrive early to warm up so game can start at 2:00.
The standings page has been updated to link to teams UPA Score Reporter results. This should keep everyone
updated on how each team is doing and allow people to see results. I also am encouraging teams to use the
Forum to post game recaps or just talk about High School Ultimate in general. It would be a great way to
foster community within the league.
Update 4/3/2008
Here is the basic information about State Championships.:
- May 24th-25th (Memorial Day Weekend) in Pittsburgh, PA
- Most likely will have 6 - 8 open teams from Philly and most likely all Girls' teams that are interested.
- How to Qualify:
- Play at least 3 games against unique opponents
- Play at least 3 away games
- No game cancellations with less than 24 hours notice (with exception for weather.)
Appeals can be directed to the PYU board through me.
- Teams that meet these qualifications will compete in the City Championship Series
Coaches/Captains should encourage their teams to register with the UPA, having more UPA players will help us
to get more bids for States. Players do not need to pay to register with the UPA, but will eventually need
to pay if their team qualifies for State Championships.
City Championship Series will consist of one or two rounds of playoffs leading up to a one day tournament.
The tournament will feature a UPA sanctioned division (Division 1) for teams that have qualified for States, and a Rec Division (Division 2) for all other teams. The date we are looking at for the tournament in May 17th, one week prior to State Championships. If any team feels that they will be able to host a tournament on that date, please contact me.
In other news, congratulations to Radnor for a great tournament with Green Eggs and Spam.
Teams should continue to send all game results to tomcook AT cooksclassroom DOT com. Only the winning
team should submit scores. Scores also need to be submitted on the UPA website.
Please don't forget to get your schedules submitted! These will be critical for City and State
Championships.
Congratulations to Pennsbury and O'Hara Ultimate Girl Squad for their bids to Easterns'.
Update 3/12/2008
Important
The use of Edgely fields prior to the 23rd of March is not permitted. Any games after that must be cleared
with Lindi, please contact her at, lindi AT pada DOT org, for permission to use the fields. This will
avoid scheduling conflicts, and keep PHUEL compliant with PADA's requests.
Update 3/12/2008
And they're off! The spring season has officially begun, congrats to The Haverford School for their 13 - 5
victory over Masterman. Check back every week for updates, I promise an update at least once a week,
hopefully more often.
If you would like your team contact information or website added to the Teams page, please contact tomcook AT
cooksclassroom DOT com. If you would like to create a team bio page that is hosted on this site, please let
me know and we can make that happen.
Update 3/6/2008
